Tough Market For Graduating Seniors

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

frugal-millionaireWith all the news about the lack of jobs for graduating seniors at colleges around the nation, it’s hard for many of us to be optimistic.  According to the Chicago Tribune “Employers expect to hire 22 percent fewer new college graduates this year compared with 2008.”  Even for those with job offers, it is never a sure thing with many offers being pulled.  However, we must realize that the economy is in a slump and that history has proven the recessions do not last forever.  Does this mean that the chances of getting that dream job out of college are shot?  Most likely so, but the doesn’t mean there will be no opportunity in the future.  The circumstances are only pushing college grads to weather the storm, be frugal, work harder, and gain more skills needed to get to the desired location.

Important Factors For Getting a Job In a Down Economy

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

As many of you may well know, Cal Poly students are seriously becoming worried if they are graduating but don’t yet have a job.  I was talking to a classmate of mine who is in this particular situation himself.  He’s a totally smart guy and very well maybe be smarter than me making me feel extremely lucky to have a job lined up for me already.  So what makes or breaks the possibility right now for a college student?  In my opinion I’d have to say it’s Who you know and previous experience.  I was able to get my foot in the door a bit easier than other kids because I knew one of the recruiters personally, this doesn’t mean I got a free lunch, but it did help in regards to getting some face time.  Secondly, having a resume with some real world experience says loads more than just a bunch of club affiliations.  Having some job experience in your specific field of interest will show that you can solve real world problems, or at least know what they look like.

So what if you don’t have these things?  Be scrappy.  Get your little red book out and be as resourceful as possible.  You pretty much have to be an entrepreneur and get creative.  Now get out there and do work!
